Requesting a number

by Dan on May 18, 2010

lecktrix asked:
How do you request a certain phone number? Not 800 or toll free?I recently put my business in the phone book (private book) and they published the wrong number. The number has the correct area code, correct prefix, but the last four are wrong. The number is disconnected and never been hooked up. The phone company says you can’t request ‘vanity numbers’. They have to be assigned. HELP!!

Sooner or later, you’ll wonder how to choose the right vanity 800 number for you and your business. You might even want to attach your name to it if you own the business, is this the right thing to do? Maybe not. There’s more to choosing the right vanity phone numbers.

Vanity numbers are used to represent your business and what you have to offer, not who you are; unless your marketing yourself. I found an entry on Articlebase that offers some basic tips that will help you choose effective numbers for your toll free number search.

Relevancy – Needless to say, your vanity 800 number should match your business. If you’re in the business of Dog food, don’t put 800-CAT-FOOD.

Catchiness – This is something very important, you want vanity phone numbers the will stick into the minds of your customer, something that they will easily remember.

There are more tips listed in the article. The whole idea is that there are good ways of choosing the right toll free vanity numbers or number for you and your business. It’s not about just getting what you want, you have to look at it from a consumers point of view.
